Tanzania commemorates 2025 social welfare week with focus on mental health

By The Respondent Reporter

The Ministry of Social Welfare, in partnership with sector ministries and development stakeholders, has launched the 2025 Social Welfare Week nationwide to strengthen public awareness and participation in social welfare services.

The initiative aims to build inclusive communities that promote equality, protect vulnerable groups, and enhance overall societal well-being.

This year, the national celebrations will take place from August 25–30 at the Social Welfare Institute grounds in Kijitonyama, Dar es Salaam.

The event, which attracts international attention, will bring together participants from Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, and Benin.

Under the theme “Seek Psychological Support; Strengthen Mental Health”, the week emphasizes the importance of professional mental health services and encourages citizens to seek support when facing psychological challenges.

The Vice President of Tanzania, His Excellency Dr. Phillip Isdor Mpango, will officiate the celebrations.

The week is designed to raise public knowledge about available social welfare services, promote the implementation of policies and regulations, strengthen collaboration among service providers, and exchange best practices with international partners.

It also aims to empower social welfare officers to enhance service delivery and ensure the protection of children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

Activities will include family and child welfare services, early childhood development programs, elderly and disability support, rehabilitation services, psychological and social counseling, legal advice, positive parenting education, registration of childcare centers, mental health services, and family conflict resolution.

Specialized services for survivors of gender-based violence, legal aid, referrals, and public exhibitions of childcare centers and safe homes will also be available.

Health screenings and skills development initiatives for older citizens will form part of the program.

The Ministry has urged Tanzanians to actively participate and take advantage of free services and educational programs at the Social Welfare Institute grounds.

Similar services will also be provided across regions and local government authorities nationwide.

Beyond service delivery, the week features public education campaigns, sector exhibitions, forums for childcare center owners and safe homes, and the annual national conference for social welfare officers, including international delegates.

Social Welfare Week 2025 underscores Tanzania’s commitment to creating an inclusive and equitable society.

Citizens are encouraged to join the activities, culminating in the national event on August 30, to strengthen the country’s social welfare systems and collective well-being.
