TACTIC project set to transform Musoma Town

The Government of Tanzania, through the Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), has signed a landmark agreement to implement major infrastructure projects in Musoma Municipality under the Tanzania Cities Transforming Infrastructure and Competitiveness (TACTIC) Project.

The initiative is funded through a World Bank loan valued at USD 410 million.

A signing ceremony held today in Musoma marked the official launch of the projects, which include the construction of the state-of-the-art Bweri Bus Terminal, the modern Nyasho Market, and the upgrading of several urban roads spanning over 3 kilometers including Mukendo, Shabani, and Musoma Bus–Saanane roads.

The construction work will be carried out by Henan Highway Engineering Group Company Limited, at a cost of over TZS 19.9 billion (excluding VAT). Project implementation is scheduled to be completed within 15 months, starting from August 15, 2025.

Speaking at the event, Engineer Emmanuel Manyanga, Assistant Project Coordinator for TACTIC, representing TARURA’s Chief Executive, emphasized the project’s impact on improving urban transport and commercial infrastructure.

He noted that the upgrades aim to alleviate flooding issues, create employment, and drive economic growth in Musoma.

Once completed, the Bweri Bus Terminal will have the capacity to accommodate 42 buses, 50 commuter minibuses (daladalas), 50 auto-rickshaws (bajaji), and 20 motorcycles. The facility will also include a police post, rest areas, and modern water and energy systems.

The new Nyasho Market is expected to feature 260 shops, 432 vendor stalls, a dining section for up to 100 food vendors (commonly known as mama lishe), a police post, and sustainable environmental infrastructure.

The market is projected to significantly boost municipal revenue, increasing annual collections from TZS 57 million to an estimated TZS 250 million.

The TACTIC Project is currently being implemented in 45 towns across Tanzania, with a focus on enhancing infrastructure, strengthening urban planning, and increasing the economic competitiveness of local government authorities.
