In a significant development ahead of Tanzania’s 2025 general elections, Salum Mwalimu, the presidential candidate for Chama cha Ukombozi wa Umma (CHAUMA), officially collected his nomination forms from the National Electoral Commission (NEC) today.

The handover took place at the NEC headquarters, where the Commission’s Chairperson, Justice Jacobs Mwambegele of the Court of Appeal, personally handed over the nomination documents to Mwalimu.

Accompanying him was his running mate, Devotha Mathew Minja, a former journalist from ITV Morogoro, marking a notable shift of media professionals into the political arena.

Salum Mwalimu, known for his work with Channel Ten television, and Devotha Minja both bring extensive media experience to their political journey. Their entry into the race signals a fresh dynamic in Tanzania’s political landscape.

Justice Mwambegele took time to guide the candidates through the nomination process, ensuring all forms were correctly filled.

After receiving the forms, Mwalimu signed the nomination book, officially confirming his intention to contest for the presidency under the CHAUMA party.

The NEC is set to conclude the vetting process by August 27, 2025, after which the final list of verified presidential and vice-presidential candidates will be announced.

CHAUMA’s decision to field Salum Mwalimu and Devotha Minja highlights the growing diversity of candidates in Tanzania’s elections, reflecting increasing participation from professionals beyond traditional political backgrounds.

As the election campaign period approaches, citizens across the country await to see how this new competition will influence Tanzania’s democratic process and governance.
