The Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Ambassador Dr. Pindi Chana, has chaired a high-level virtual meeting of the Lusaka Agreement Task Force (LATF) Ministerial Bureau, focusing on the leadership of the organization.

Dr. Chana, who currently serves as the Chairperson of the LATF Governing Council, led the session held on August 15, 2025, which brought together senior officials from member states to deliberate on the future of LATF Director Edward Phiri, whose contract had expired.

Among the participants were Zambia’s Minister of Tourism, Rodney Sikumba, Permanent Secretary and Deputy Permanent Secretary from Zambia’s Ministry of Tourism, as well as Tanzania’s Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, CP Benedict Wakulyamba. Also present were the Director of Wildlife, Dr. Alexander Lobora, and Mr. Ezekiel Goboro. Kenya was represented by its Director of Wildlife.

The meeting concluded with a unanimous decision by member states to renew Mr. Phiri’s contract for another three years, citing his outstanding leadership and performance as key factors in their support.

Speaking during the session, Minister Chana underscored the importance of establishing a clear and structured leadership transition framework within LATF to ensure equitable participation among member countries.

“The Secretariat should draft a proposal to introduce term limits for the LATF Director, to allow all member states the opportunity to take part in the leadership of the institution,” she stated.

In response, Mr. Phiri expressed gratitude for the renewed trust placed in him, pledging to continue serving the organization with professionalism, integrity, and commitment to the shared goals of member nations.

The LATF Ministerial Bureau is authorized to make key decisions on behalf of member states under the Lusaka Agreement.

Currently, Tanzania holds the presidency, Congo Brazzaville serves as Vice Chair, and Zambia acts as the Rapporteur.
