Mbeya Region has been ranked the top performer in the country’s adult literacy programme, with 12 percent of its adult population demonstrating the ability to read, write, and count placing it ahead of other regions in the national assessment.
The revelation was made on August 13, 2025, by Mbeya District Commissioner, Solomon Itunda, who represented Regional Commissioner, Beno Malisa, during the opening of a one-day training on road safety, health, and environmental management for transport officers and food vendors.
The training, organized by the Institute of Adult Education, is part of activities to commemorate the institution’s 50th anniversary.
“In the government’s monitoring programme identifying regions where some adults cannot read, write, or count, Mbeya scored 12 percent literacy. This shows we are ahead of many regions. Even in other areas, such as primary and secondary education, we have continued to excel nationally, holding the second position,” said Mr. Itunda.
He noted that the golden jubilee programme aims to equip transport operators with vital knowledge on safe and responsible vehicle use, particularly those who have not previously accessed such training.
Mr. Itunda urged motorcycle and vehicle operators to strictly follow road regulations, warning against criminal behaviour such as taking passengers to secluded areas to commit acts of violence, particularly against women. He called on the public to reject such individuals and report them to the authorities.
Institute of Adult Education Director, Prof. Philipo Sanga, said the organisation had dedicated part of its anniversary to targeted community training.
In Mbeya, he explained, transport operators and food vendors were brought together to learn practical skills to improve their daily work.
Mbeya Region Bodaboda Association Chairperson, Aliko Fwanda, called on riders to protect the reputation of their trade by avoiding illegal acts.
“We have riders who commit rape or rob passengers during the day or night. We are now focusing on educating our young riders so that Mbeya remains safe,” Mr. Fwanda said.
