The Tanzania Mainland Premier League will once again witness the country’s most electrifying football rivalry as Young Africans (Yanga) and Simba SC face off in the first-round Kariakoo Derby on December 13, 2025, at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
The return leg of the derby widely regarded as the highlight of the domestic football calendar will be played on April 4, 2026.
The fixture list, unveiled yesterday by the Tanzania Premier League Board (TPLB), also confirmed that the new season will kick off on September 17 with two opening matches: KMC taking on Dodoma Jiji and Coastal Union hosting Tanzania Prisons at the Mkwakwani Stadium in Tanga.
TPLB Acting Chief Executive Officer Ibrahim Mwayela told reporters that the schedule was designed to strike a balance between domestic and international commitments, including the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which Tanzania will host.
“We recognize that this season presents a tight calendar due to the number of competitions taking place. However, we have worked to ensure that the fixture is solid, fair, and practical,” said Mwayela.
He noted that the league is expected to conclude on May 23, 2026, with no unnecessary postponements since the calendar already accounts for both domestic tournaments and continental engagements.
According to Mwayela, the fixture also considers Tanzania’s international representatives Yanga, Simba, Azam, and Singida Black Stars while ensuring smooth travel logistics for other clubs in line with FIFA guidelines.
“We do not expect complaints from clubs because every factor, from logistics to competition fairness, has been taken into account,” he stressed.
Mwayela also praised the government and the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) for their continued support, saying their commitment has significantly improved the standard and competitiveness of the country’s top-tier league.
The Kariakoo Derby remains the most watched sporting event in Tanzania, drawing thousands of passionate fans to the stadium and millions more following on television across the region.
