The government has stepped up efforts to rescue miners trapped underground following a tragic mine accident in Nyandolwa, Shinyanga Region, calling for urgent and coordinated action to save lives.

As of August 21, 2025, ten of the 25 miners caught in the collapse have been rescued. Four remain alive, one died shortly after reaching the hospital, and seven were confirmed dead, officials said.

Shinyanga Regional Commissioner, Mboni Mhita, confirmed the details, explaining that the accident occurred about ten days ago and has required extended rescue operations under extremely challenging conditions.

The collapse occurred after sudden ground subsidence affected three shafts under repair by miners operating under a small-scale mining license.

“We are working closely with various institutions to ensure that the remaining miners are brought out safely. This is a deeply tragic event for our region and the nation,” Mr. Mhita said.

Deputy Secretary-General in the Prime Minister’s Office for Policy, Parliament, and Coordination, Dr. James Kilabuko, called on the rescue teams to accelerate operations, emphasizing that every second counts in saving lives.

“I commend the entire rescue team for their dedication. It is now critical to intensify efforts, while ensuring the safety of the rescuers themselves,” Dr. Kilabuko said.

The Chairperson of the Minerals Commission, Dr. Janet Lekashingo, visited the site to convey condolences to the families of the victims and those affected. She urged rescuers to stay vigilant and prioritize safety during operations.

“This is a very sad accident. The Minerals Commission expresses sympathy to the victims’ families. We will continue monitoring to ensure all safety measures in mines are strictly enforced to prevent similar incidents in the future,” Dr. Lekashingo said.

Rescue teams include officers from the Fire and Rescue Force, Police, Minerals Commission, Ministry of Minerals, fellow miners, Barrick Bulyanhulu Mine, and regional and district government officials. All are working in coordination to ensure the safe extraction of the remaining miners.

Government efforts are ongoing, and hope remains for the families of those still trapped. Authorities have promised full support to victims and a thorough investigation into the causes of the accident.
