JOWUTA joins TUCTA, boosting opportunities for journalists

Journalists in Tanzania now have stronger support and new opportunities after the Journalists’ Union of Tanzania (JOWUTA) was officially recognized as a member of the Trade Union Congress of Tanzania (TUCTA).

The certificate of recognition was handed over today, Friday, August 15, 2025, by the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youth, Employment, and Persons with Disabilities), Ridhiwani Kikwete, to JOWUTA Chairman Musa Juma.

The event also marked the launch of TUCTA’s new commercial building in Arusha.

TUCTA President Tumaini Nyamhokya said JOWUTA’s membership strengthens the federation, now comprising 16 unions, up from 13. He urged journalists to join the union to access training, collective advocacy, and protection of their rights.

Chairman Musa Juma hailed the recognition as a milestone for JOWUTA and pledged close collaboration with TUCTA to advance journalists’ welfare.

Other newly recognized unions include the Private Security Workers’ Union (TUPSE) and the Tanzania Industrial Services Workers’ Union (TASIWU).

Minister Kikwete emphasized the union’s historical significance.

“Workers have contributed to every major national achievement, from education and infrastructure to ports. Unions like JOWUTA play a vital role in national development,” he said.

The newly launched TUCTA building, whose latest phase started in 2023, is 98 percent complete.

It hosts 138 tenants, generating over TZS 50 million monthly, and includes hotel facilities with a presidential suite. Minister Kikwete said the investment will support union solidarity, economic growth, and better services for members.
