Fountain Gate take crucial first-leg advantage in NBC Premier League playoffs

By Flora Mkoloma

Fountain Gate SC took a significant step toward retaining their NBC Premier League status after earning a convincing 3–1 win over Stand United in the first leg of the promotion/relegation playoff match played on Sunday at CCM Kambarage Stadium.

The Babati-based side made the most of their opening 90 minutes in the two-legged tie, capitalizing on home advantage and displaying greater control throughout the game.

With this result, Fountain Gate head into the decisive return leg with momentum firmly on their side.

The match began with high intensity as both teams sought early dominance. Fountain Gate broke the deadlock in the 29th minute through forward Kassim Haruna, who calmly slotted home to give his side the lead.

Stand United responded just before halftime when a defensive error from Mgeveke Mgeveke resulted in an own goal, bringing the game level at 1–1. The first half ended all square, setting up a competitive second half.

After the break, Fountain Gate adjusted tactically and reasserted control. Their efforts paid off in the 65th minute when Sadick Ramadhan restored the lead with a well-taken goal. The momentum stayed with the hosts, and in the 85th minute, Mudrick Shehe sealed the victory with a third goal, giving Fountain Gate a valuable two-goal cushion.

With the aggregate now standing at 3–1, Fountain Gate head into the second leg scheduled for July 8 at Tanzanite Kwaraa Stadium in Babati with confidence and a clear objective: to protect or extend their lead and confirm their place in the top flight for the 2025/26 season.

For Stand United, the task is clear but difficult. They must produce a strong away performance and score at least two unanswered goals to keep their Premier League hopes alive.

The Shinyanga side will need to address their defensive vulnerabilities and sharpen their attacking edge ahead of the return fixture.

The playoff’s second leg is expected to draw wide attention, as both sides battle not only for victory but for their place in the highest level of Tanzanian football.
