Local Government Authorities in Chamwino, Manyoni, and Singida districts have been called upon to implement sustainable strategies that will ensure continued support for vulnerable households previously assisted under the BRAC Maendeleo poverty alleviation and disability support project.
The appeal was made by Ms. Amina Mfaki, a Social Welfare Officer from the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), during the official closing session of the project held in Chamwino District, Dodoma Region.
“The impact of this project has been evident in the way it has uplifted poor households and persons with disabilities. With BRAC Maendeleo’s support coming to an end, it is now the responsibility of the respective councils to ensure that these beneficiaries continue to receive support and are not left behind,” said Ms. Mfaki.
She stressed that councils must develop practical and inclusive follow-up plans to protect the progress made and promote long-term community resilience.
The project, which ran for 30 months, targeted extremely poor households and those caring for people with disabilities in selected districts across Dodoma and Singida regions.
Ms. Rachel Bwiliza, Project Manager at BRAC Maendeleo, commended the Tanzanian Government for its unwavering support throughout the implementation process.
She singled out the contributions of PO-RALG, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women, and Special Groups as critical to the project’s success.
“This project has reached over 1,050 households—85 percent of which are led by low-income women and 15 percent comprising families with persons with disabilities,” said Ms. Bwiliza.
She underscored the importance of sustaining the results achieved and encouraged local authorities to integrate the project’s lessons into their development plans to ensure no vulnerable household is left behind.
The BRAC Maendeleo project has been praised as a practical model of inclusive development, contributing to national efforts to reduce poverty and enhance social protection for marginalized groups in Tanzania.
