English Premier League side Chelsea have advanced to the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup after defeating Brazilian club Palmeiras 2-1 in a tightly contested quarter-final match.

The victory sets up a high-stakes semifinal clash with another Brazilian powerhouse, Fluminense, who booked their spot after edging Saudi side Al Hilal 2-1 in their quarter-final tie.

Chelsea, managed by Mauricio Pochettino, came into the match with intent and energy. The Blues dominated early proceedings, controlling possession and applying consistent pressure on Palmeiras' backline.

Their breakthrough came in the 27th minute when French forward Christopher Nkunku struck a sensational goal from outside the box, giving Chelsea a deserved 1-0 lead going into the break.

Palmeiras, the 2021 Copa Libertadores champions, showed their quality in the second half, pressing for an equalizer.

Their efforts were rewarded in the 63rd minute when midfielder Raphael Veiga converted from the penalty spot after a handball incident in the Chelsea area.

The equalizer brought intensity to the contest, but Chelsea’s depth proved crucial. In the 78th minute, young midfielder Cole Palmer introduced as a substitute took advantage of a defensive lapse to calmly restore Chelsea’s lead. His goal proved to be the match-winner, despite Palmeiras mounting late pressure.

Chelsea's backline, led by veteran Thiago Silva and supported by Levi Colwill, held firm in the closing stages. Goalkeeper Robert Sánchez also made a crucial save in added time to secure the win.

Speaking after the match, Pochettino commended his players for their composure and tactical discipline. “This was a strong performance against a quality side. We showed resilience and quality in key moments,” he said.

Chelsea will now prepare to face Fluminense in what promises to be a thrilling all-Brazilian affair, at least in terms of opponents. A win would put them in the final, raising hopes of a second Club World Cup title following their 2021 success.

The Club World Cup continues to draw global attention as elite clubs from different continents battle for international supremacy.
