Chadema supporters rally at Court for Tundu Lissu ruling

Senior officials and loyal supporters of Tanzania’s main opposition party, Chadema, gathered at the High Court Sub-Registry in Dar es Salaam on Friday to attend a critical ruling in a case involving party stalwart and former presidential candidate, Tundu Lissu.

Lissu, a prominent critic of the government, filed an application contesting a decision by the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court to postpone proceedings in a case accusing him of publishing false information online.

The adjournment, issued on 2 June 2025, halted the hearing of the charges that Lissu maintains are politically motivated.

Justice Elizabeth Mkwizu, who is presiding over the matter, was expected to deliver her ruling today after hearing arguments from both state attorneys and Lissu’s defence team.

The ruling could determine whether the original case proceeds or is reassessed due to alleged procedural irregularities.

Courtroom One was opened to the public as Justice Mkwizu entered to read her decision. The atmosphere was markedly calmer than on previous occasions.

Lissu, known for his defiant courtroom presence, appeared subdued as he greeted his legal team and supporters without the usual raised two-finger salute a gesture he frequently uses as a symbol of resistance.

Security around the court was visibly tight. Dozens of officers, both in uniform and plainclothes, were stationed at key points in and outside the courthouse in anticipation of large crowds and potential demonstrations.

The case has once again brought attention to Tanzania’s political climate and the delicate balance between state authority and freedom of expression.

Lissu, who survived an assassination attempt in 2017 and has since remained a vocal opposition figure, continues to face multiple legal challenges that his supporters argue are aimed at silencing dissent.

Friday’s ruling is seen as a litmus test for judicial independence and the space for opposition politics ahead of Tanzania’s forthcoming general elections.
