Samia appoints new head of Muhimbili as WHO taps Janabi for Africa role

By Alfred Zacharia

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has appointed Dr Delilah Charles Kimambo as the new Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), succeeding Prof Mohamed Yakub Janabi, who has taken up a new post as the WHO Regional Director for Africa.

The appointments were announced through a press statement issued by the Director of Presidential Communications, Sharifa B. Nyanga, quoting Chief Secretary Ambassador Dr Moses Kusiluka.

Dr Kimambo is a seasoned medical professional with years of experience in clinical practice, hospital management, and health systems strengthening.

Before her appointment, she held several leadership roles in the health sector, with a strong background in both public and private healthcare delivery. Her expertise in hospital operations and patient care positions her to continue driving Muhimbili’s role as Tanzania’s leading national referral and teaching hospital.

She takes over from Prof Janabi, a highly respected cardiologist whose election to WHO's top regional health post is seen as a milestone for Tanzania’s growing influence in global health leadership.

Under his leadership, Muhimbili expanded its specialized care and research capacity, serving thousands of patients across Tanzania and neighboring countries.

In addition to Dr Kimambo’s appointment, President Samia made several other leadership changes. Retired Judge Hamisa Hamis Kalombola was reappointed for a second term as Chairperson of the Public Service Commission, while Mr Paul Thomas Sangawe was also reappointed to chair the Board of Trustees for the SELF Microfinance Fund.

Meanwhile, Judge Rose Ally Ebrahim was appointed Chairperson of the Fair Competition Tribunal, and Ambassador Mbarouk Nassor Mbarouk was assigned to serve as Tanzania’s Ambassador to Italy.

According to the official statement, the appointments reflect the President’s continued efforts to strengthen public institutions and Tanzania’s diplomatic representation abroad.
