Nzega Urban is poised for a highly anticipated political contest as prominent businessman and mining investor Peter Andrea Mashili has declared his intention to run for the constituency's parliamentary seat in the 2025 general election, setting the stage for a showdown with the incumbent, Agriculture Minister Hussein Bashe.
Mashili, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Mashili Company Limited and heads several gold processing ventures including Matinje Mining, Msilale Mining, and Igurubi Mining collected nomination forms from the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party in Nzega District over the weekend.
Speaking shortly after collecting the forms, Mashili said his decision to enter the race is driven by the need to inject fresh energy and renewed momentum into the execution of CCM’s development agenda for the 2025–2030 period.
“I believe the people of Nzega Urban deserve new leadership that will actively engage citizens in the decision-making process, advocate for their interests, and champion sustainable development,” he said. “After ten years of service, it is time for Bashe to pass the baton.”
Mashili promised that, if endorsed by CCM and subsequently elected, he would prioritise grassroots engagement, inclusive economic empowerment, and better access to opportunities in agriculture, livestock, and fisheries sectors that form the economic backbone of the Nzega community.
Known for his business acumen and long-standing involvement in community development, Mashili is widely regarded as one of Tanzania’s most prominent entrepreneurs in the mining sector.
A resident of Mbugani in Nzega District, he has been instrumental in improving education infrastructure and supporting social development projects in the area.
Political observers in the region say Mashili’s entry into the race signals a serious challenge to the incumbent, who also serves as a senior government minister. Some analysts believe that his longstanding commitment to community development positions him as a strong contender in the upcoming CCM primaries.
The internal party race in Nzega Urban is expected to draw significant attention as CCM prepares to select its parliamentary candidates ahead of the 2025 general election.
