The Conservation Commissioner of the Tanzania National Parks Authority (Tanapa), CPA (T) Musa Nassoro Kuji, has called for effective management and sustainability of development projects in Nyerere National Park, including those under the REGROW programme.
Commissioner Kuji made the remarks on June 29, 2025, during his visit to inspect the ongoing projects and hold discussions with staff at the park’s Mtemere headquarters.
He commended the park’s officers and rangers for their contribution to Nyerere National Park's success, including its recent recognition at the 2025 World Travel Awards held in Dar es Salaam on June 28, where it won the award for Africa’s Leading Scenic Tourist Attraction.
Projects inspected included the Mtemere airstrip, which is under construction and expected to handle larger aircraft. The facility features a runway of approximately 1.8 kilometres and will have the capacity to receive up to 140 tourists at a time.
Other key projects include the Mtemere gate, which is 90 percent complete, staff housing designed to support park officers and patrol teams, a 20-room guest rest house, a tourist campsite, and visitor entry points.
Commissioner Kuji underscored the need to protect these investments to ensure they deliver on their intended objectives: enhancing visitor services, increasing tourist numbers and revenue, strengthening resource protection, and improving staff welfare.
“Strong performance requires safeguarding infrastructure in the workplace. These facilities must be maintained to serve their purpose and support long-term conservation goals,” he said.
Welcoming the Commissioner, Senior Assistant Conservation Commissioner John Nyamhanga expressed appreciation for the visit, noting that it would boost staff morale and reinforce work ethic across the park.
“We are grateful for your time and support. Your visit has motivated our team to continue preserving the infrastructure and remain committed to Tanapa’s mission,” he said.
Assistant Conservation Commissioner and Nyerere Park Chief, Empraim Mwangomo, reported that the park had collected TSh13.7 billion in revenue during the 2024/25 financial year as of June 28, 2025.
He noted that the completion of the ongoing projects is expected to attract more tourists, boost revenue, and improve staff living conditions.
Nyerere National Park is renowned for its striking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and pristine natural environment—qualities that contributed to its World Travel Award win. Tanapa secured seven awards at the event, further elevating Tanzania’s profile as a top global travel destination.
