TANESCO denies allegations of electricity fraud

By The Respondent Reporter

On Monday, May 26, 2025, the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) issued a formal response rejecting claims made in a recent article published by the Rada newspaper entitled “Electricity Scamming in Tanzania.”

The report alleged that customers were being defrauded in the purchase of electricity, implicating TANESCO and companies involved in solar energy distribution.

TANESCO categorically denies any involvement in fraudulent practices related to the sale or distribution of electricity, including energy generated by private solar companies.

The company operates strictly under the regulatory framework established by the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA), adhering to approved tariffs and legal guidelines.

TANESCO is committed to transparency and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations in delivering energy services.

The misleading headline and content of the article have caused unnecessary concern among TANESCO’s customers and the wider public by insinuating that the company engages in “scamming” or theft of electricity.

Such unfounded accusations not only distort the truth but also threaten to undermine the company’s reputation and the government’s efforts to expand reliable energy access across Tanzania.

TANESCO strongly condemns irresponsible journalism that disseminates unverified information and calls upon media outlets to prioritize accuracy and integrity in their reporting.

The company urges Rada newspaper’s editorial team to promptly retract and correct the false claims using the same channels and visibility as the original publication to restore public confidence.

As Tanzania’s primary electricity provider, TANESCO remains dedicated to delivering dependable and fairly priced power to all citizens.

The company encourages consumers to rely on official sources for accurate information and assures the public of its ongoing commitment to transparency, accountability, and quality service.

TANESCO invites continued dialogue with stakeholders and the media to clarify any concerns and support Tanzania’s development goals in the energy sector.

Upholding trust and truth in communications is essential for the collective progress of the nation’s electricity services.
