Safari cup empowers youth through football talent hunt

The upcoming Safari Cup talent bonanza, scheduled for May 31 at Nyamagana Stadium in Mwanza, is more than a sports showcase it’s a strategic investment in the future of Tanzanian football. Designed to identify and nurture talent among youth aged 18 to 24, the event reflects growing efforts to strengthen the national football pipeline.

The initiative has gained strong backing from both corporate and football leadership. National team striker Simon Msuva, who also plays for Al Najma in Saudi Arabia, was named Chief Scout for the Safari Cup on May 28 in Dar es Salaam. He believes the event will unearth a new generation of stars.

“I’m honored to be part of this journey. We believe regions like Mwanza hold untapped potential that can help shape the future of Taifa Stars,” said Msuva.

The Safari Cup is organized by Safari Lager, a brand under Tanzanian Breweries Limited (TBL). The company previously hosted a successful bonanza in Mbeya, which drew large youth participation and formed 24 teams.

“In Mbeya, the energy was overwhelming. We saw raw talent that just needed a platform. We expect the same if not more in Mwanza,” said Pamela Kikuli, Safari Lager’s Brand Manager.

This collaboration between business and sport highlights a growing trend: corporate investment in community development through football. It’s a win-win companies build goodwill while young athletes get rare exposure.

The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) has officially endorsed the Safari Cup, signaling institutional alignment and the event’s significance.

“This is more than a tournament; it’s a movement. We welcome partners like Safari who are committed to youth development,” said Clifford Mario Ndimbo, TFF’s Communications Officer.

However, experts stress that such initiatives must be followed by structured training programs, scouting pathways, and long-term support to truly impact the sport.

As Mwanza readies for kickoff, the stakes are high not just for the matches ahead, but for the dreams and futures of Tanzania’s emerging football talents.
