The Tanzanian government has announced plans to engage with jogging clubs across the country to discuss collaborative strategies for national development through sports and fitness.
This was stated today, May 24, 2025, by the Deputy Minister for Information, Culture, Arts, and Sports, Hamis Mwinjuma, during the official launch of the Kijichi Gateway Jogging Club held at its headquarters in Dar es Salaam.
“The purpose of this engagement is to create a platform for joint planning and consultation on key sports initiatives, as well as to encourage community participation in regular physical exercise,” said Mwinjuma.
He explained that the initiative will be coordinated by the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts, and Sports, and that preparations are ongoing to ensure its successful rollout.
The Deputy Minister congratulated the club on its launch, urging members to continue motivating each other and to promote a culture of fitness and wellness within their communities.
He also highlighted the government's readiness to support fundraising efforts through marathon events, stating that the doors are open for collaboration in such initiatives.
Boniface Tamba, Acting Director of Sports Development, commended the club’s leadership for taking the initiative, noting that physical exercise is not only essential for health but also offers social and economic benefits.
He encouraged the club to expand into other sports, such as basketball and others, in order to provide a broader platform for discovering and nurturing local talent.
“Sports today are a source of both employment and business opportunities. I commend your efforts, and the government is committed to supporting you,” said Tamba.
On behalf of the club, Secretary Betson Maimu outlined their future goals, including organizing a marathon to raise funds. He noted that while the club started as a small jogging group, it has grown with a broader vision.
“Our aim is to promote unity, mutual understanding, and public health. We plan to organize a marathon in the near future to support these efforts and we look forward to your support when the time comes,” Maimu said.
Founded just 10 months ago by five members, the Kijichi Gateway Jogging Club now boasts a growing membership of 64 individuals.
