Afrey Nsomba declares bid for Mbeya Urban MP seat as 2025 race begins

By Samwel Ndoni, Mbeya

Afrey Nsomba, the Chairman the ruling party (CCM) in Mbeya Urban District, has officially announced his intention to contest for the Member of Parliament (MP) seat for Mbeya Urban in the 2025 General Election.

He made the announcement today in Mbeya, just one day after the current MP, Dr. Tulia Ackson, declared that she will not seek re-election in Mbeya Urban. Dr. Tulia, who also serves as the Speaker of Parliament, said she will instead run for the Uyole Constituency seat.

Speaking to journalists, Mr. Nsomba said his decision was influenced by calls from residents and his leadership experience within the party.

“I know the challenges people are facing in Mbeya Urban,” said Nsomba. “I am ready to work with them to find solutions through unity, transparency, and accountability.”

He said if elected, he will focus on improving education, health services, roads, and the local economy, especially for young people and women.

Mr. Nsomba also promised to maintain a good relationship with Dr. Tulia despite her move to another constituency.

He encouraged other CCM members to come forward and announce their intentions if they believe they are ready.

“Competition in our party should be open and fair. CCM will ensure justice for all candidates,” he said.

His announcement has officially opened the race for the Mbeya Urban seat, which has now become one of the most watched in the region.

Dr. Tulia has served as MP for the area since 2020, and her departure has created space for new political leadership.

As the 2025 General Election approaches, more political figures are expected to declare their candidacy. The situation in Mbeya Urban shows how the political scene is beginning to shift, with new leaders preparing to take the stage.
