President Samia Suluhu Hassan has thanked the Government of Angola and President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço for supporting Tanzania’s candidate, Professor Mohammed Janabi, in his bid to become the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa.

Professor Janabi, a well-known medical expert from Tanzania, is running for the position that became vacant after the death of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile in November 2025. The election to fill the post is expected to happen soon.

President Samia gave her thanks during her visit to Angola, where she spoke alongside President Lourenço.

“I thank the Government of Angola for showing their willingness to support our candidate for the position of WHO Regional Director for Africa, Professor Mohammed Janabi from Tanzania,” she said.

President Samia arrived in Angola on Thursday for a three-day official visit. The visit aims to strengthen the friendship and cooperation between Tanzania and Angola. During her stay, she held important talks with President Lourenço.

Their discussions focused on key areas such as health, trade, and infrastructure development.

Tanzania believes that Professor Janabi is highly qualified for the WHO position. He is expected to help improve healthcare systems across Africa if elected. Angola’s support gives his candidacy a strong push as Tanzania seeks regional unity in promoting African leadership in international organizations.

The visit also showed the two countries’ commitment to working together for development. President Samia’s appreciation highlights how African nations can support each other to gain strong representation in global institutions like the WHO.

Her visit to Angola marks another step in building strong ties and shared goals between Tanzania and other African nations.
