The government has clarified that the ongoing construction of five bridges on the Dar es Salaam - Lindi highway will not be hindered by the current efforts to repair areas damaged by recent heavy rains.
In a statement issued today, the Minister for Works, Abdallah Ulega, emphasized that the construction work on the bridges is continuing and will not affect the restoration of road sections impacted by the floods.
Speaking from Somanga and Matandu in Lindi Region, where he is overseeing emergency repairs, Ulega assured the public that the government is committed to addressing both immediate and long-term infrastructure needs.
“Bridge construction is not a one-time project, but a step-by-step process,” Ulega stated, reinforcing that the work is ongoing.
“I want to assure Tanzanians that since the emergency situation arose last year, the government has taken swift and effective action, and contractors are actively working at every site.”
Furthermore, Ulega shared that the government has allocated sufficient funds for the permanent construction of the bridges, ensuring the project will be completed as planned.
“This is not a temporary solution. The bridge construction will be a long-term project, and we are committed to its completion.”
Regarding the transportation situation, Ulega confirmed that travel services to the southern regions have resumed since early morning and are steadily improving.
"Passenger buses, small vehicles, and large trucks are all moving through the Somanga and Matandu areas, and the situation is improving every day, allowing people to continue their journeys."
In light of previous travel disruptions, Ulega also addressed concerns from passengers waiting at the Mbagala Southern Regions Bus Terminal due to fears of being unable to cross the Somanga - Mtama stretch.
“I want to reassure everyone that the area is now safe and passable, and travelers should feel confident to continue their journey.”
Ulega took a moment to express his gratitude to the citizens who had faced these challenges with patience and understanding.
He also praised the contractors and experts from the Ministry of Works and TANROADS for their tireless efforts.
“I commend the contractors and the team for their round-the-clock work, ensuring that communication and transport were restored as quickly as possible.”
