Tanzania woos Angolan investors and tourists with Visa free approval

Tanzania’s decision to waive tourist visa requirements for Angolan citizens marks a strategic diplomatic gesture aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and unlocking new avenues for economic collaboration between the two African nations.

The announcement was made on April 8, 2025, by President Samia Suluhu Hassan during her official state visit to Angola, following bilateral talks with her host, President João Lourenço, at the Presidential Palace in Luanda.

“I am pleased to announce the waiver of tourist visa requirements for Angolan citizens wishing to visit Tanzania,” said President Hassan during a joint press briefing.

The decision is expected to benefit key sectors such as travel, investment and trade.

The visa waiver underscores Tanzania’s push for regional economic integration and increased tourism flows, particularly from partner countries with untapped potential.

Angola, with its growing middle class and oil-backed economy, represents a valuable market for Tanzania’s travel and investment opportunities.

President Hassan’s visit comes at a time when both countries are exploring deeper ties beyond traditional diplomatic engagements.

The two leaders agreed to expand cooperation in strategic sectors such as mining and oil and gas—areas seen as key engines for job creation and economic diversification in both nations.

“Our defence forces, which were once united in the fight for liberation, have continued to enjoy strong ties, a legacy that began during our respective independence movements,” President Hassan noted, invoking the historical roots of the Tanzania-Angola relationship.

The discussions also paved the way for a reciprocal state visit, with President Lourenço scheduled to visit Tanzania in July.

During his trip, he will serve as guest of honour at the opening of the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair, commonly known as Sabasaba. His participation is expected to attract more Angolan business interests to East Africa’s growing economy.

The announcement highlights President Hassan’s broader diplomatic approach—one that blends economic pragmatism with historical awareness and people-centered policy.

She also took time to brief her counterpart on Tanzania’s current political and economic trajectory, reinforcing a shared commitment to exploring new frontiers of cooperation.

“The historical bond between our countries, founded by the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and Angola’s first President, Mr António Agostinho Neto, remains strong and continues to guide our diplomatic efforts,” President Hassan affirmed.

A significant milestone in the visit will be President Hassan’s address to the Angolan Parliament, where she is set to become the first female African Head of State to do so.

The invitation, extended by Speaker of the Parliament Ms Carolina Cerqueira, signifies the high regard in which Tanzania’s leader is held and reflects Angola’s commitment to elevating inter-African cooperation.

Her visit will conclude with a tour of the Luanda Oil Refinery, further emphasizing the energy sector as a pillar of the two countries’ economic partnership.

In essence, Tanzania’s visa-free move is more than a symbolic gesture—it is a practical step toward unlocking regional mobility, facilitating investment, and reenergizing African unity through actionable diplomacy. For Angola, it opens a door to East African markets. For Tanzania, it’s a reaffirmation of its regional leadership and its vision for an interconnected Africa.
