The Rural Energy Agency (REA) has been playing a vital role in promoting the proper and sustainable use of electricity among Tanzanians, with a strong focus on modern, energy-efficient appliances.
This initiative aims to ensure that the benefits of electricity extend beyond urban areas, reaching rural populations and contributing to the country’s economic development.
One of the key initiatives is the promotion of electric stoves, which are not only energy-efficient but also much safer for users' health and more affordable compared to traditional cooking methods such as firewood or charcoal.
In a recent meeting with residents of the Mara region, Abdulrazack Mkomi, a Community Development Officer from REA, highlighted the advantages of using electric stoves.
"Electric stoves are not only beneficial for the environment but also offer a significant health advantage over traditional cooking methods, such as firewood and charcoal, which are known to release harmful pollutants," Mkomi explained.
He further emphasized that electric stoves are more cost-effective, helping families reduce their energy expenses in the long run.
As part of its efforts to promote clean energy, REA is also distributing gas stoves across the country. "We are committed to encouraging the use of clean cooking energy, and our distribution of gas stoves will help make clean cooking solutions more accessible and affordable for Tanzanians," Mkomi added.
This effort aims to reduce reliance on biomass fuels, which are harmful to both human health and the environment.
The promotion of electric and gas stoves is part of REA's broader campaign to increase the adoption of clean energy technologies among Tanzanians, especially in rural areas.
In addition to promoting clean cooking solutions, the REA is working to increase electricity access in rural areas.
Omary Gwillah, the REA Projects Engineer for the Mara region, shared that the national project to provide electricity to all villages has made significant progress.
"We have made great strides in ensuring that electricity is available to all villages in Tanzania," Gwillah said.
He further explained that this initiative is crucial for improving the livelihoods of Tanzanians, especially in rural communities, by providing reliable and affordable electricity.
Gwillah also highlighted the government’s commitment to improving the economic well-being of Tanzanians through electricity access.
"Bringing electricity infrastructure to rural areas is key to boosting local economies, as it will encourage the growth of small and medium-sized industries," he said.
The availability of electricity also has a positive impact on healthcare and education services, allowing medical facilities to operate more effectively and schools to provide better learning environments.
The REA’s ongoing efforts to expand electricity access are part of the government's broader strategy to ensure sustainable development and improve the quality of life for all Tanzanians.
As Gwillah stated, "By improving access to electricity, we are not only enhancing the economy but also helping to improve essential services such as healthcare and education, which are fundamental to the country's long-term development."
These efforts highlight the critical role of clean energy and electricity infrastructure in fostering economic growth, social progress, and environmental sustainability across Tanzania.
