Government calls for fairness and transparency in loan contracts

The government has urged registered financial institutions providing loan services to uphold transparency and fairness in their agreements, ensuring that borrowers, particularly those with limited literacy, are not taken advantage of by signing contracts they do not fully understand.

Kwimba District Commissioner,  Ng’wilabuzu Ndatwa Ludigija, made this call during a meeting with a team of experts from the Ministry of Finance and its affiliated institutions, who are in Mwanza Region to educate various groups on financial literacy.

“The government insists on transparency and fairness in financial contracts to safeguard citizens’ rights and ensure they fully comprehend the terms they are agreeing to,” said  Ludigija.

He highlighted concerns that some borrowers, especially those unable to read or write, are subjected to unfair loan repayment terms, including extended repayment periods beyond what was verbally agreed upon.

Ludigija commended the Ministry of Finance for conducting financial education programs in Mwanza, noting that such initiatives will equip citizens with essential knowledge on financial management, budgeting, and making informed investment decisions for economic empowerment.

Senior Officer from the Financial Sector Development Department at the Ministry of Finance, Mr. Salim Kimaro, advised citizens to develop the habit of carefully reading and understanding contracts before signing.

He emphasized that many loan beneficiaries face repayment difficulties due to poor financial planning, while others unknowingly commit to unfavorable terms by failing to review the agreements.

One of the participants in the financial literacy training, Mr. Nkwadi Joseph, a resident of Kwimba, expressed gratitude to the government under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for facilitating the program.

"Before receiving this education, we often took loans with harsh conditions without understanding the consequences. Now, we recognize the importance of structured and well-managed loans," said Mr. Joseph.

The Ministry of Finance has concluded its financial literacy initiative in Ilemela, Magu, Misungwi, and Kwimba districts in Mwanza Region. To date, the ministry has extended its financial education programs to 16 regions across the country.
