The Speaker of the National Assembly of the United Republic of Tanzania and President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Dr. Tulia Ackson, officially opened the 150th IPU Assembly today, April 6, 2025, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
She also presided over the meetings of the Governing Council, where she led discussions on key agenda items presented by the Executive Committee.
These included a range of resolutions and decisions, which were formally submitted to the Council and later shared during the first of four official sessions of the Assembly.
The Assembly has convened 181 Member Parliaments, alongside regional and community parliaments with observer status, as well as United Nations agencies and international organizations.
Participants are engaging under the central theme: “Parliamentary Action for Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions for All,” exploring how parliaments can contribute to inclusive development and justice worldwide.
Two major resolutions are expected to be adopted during the Assembly. The first focuses on the role of parliaments in advancing the two-state solution for Palestine, while the second outlines parliamentary strategies to reduce the long-term impacts of conflict, including armed conflict, in the pursuit of sustainable development goals.
As part of the proceedings, delegates also elected Tanzila Narbaeva, Speaker of the Parliament of Uzbekistan and host of the Assembly, as President of the 150th IPU Assembly.
