The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has launched a campaign to educate primary school children in the Lake Zone regions on the importance of prioritizing safety when using electricity.
The initiative, titled "Prioritize Safety First When Using Electricity," was officially introduced on March 27 and targets students in Mara, Kagera, Mwanza, Geita, and Simiyu.
The campaign aims to equip young learners with essential knowledge on identifying electrical hazards, preventing accidents, and minimizing risks associated with electricity usage.
Speaking at one of the visited schools, TANESCO’s Acting Marketing Manager, Mr. Sylvester Matiku, emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, "Children are among the most vulnerable groups affected by electrical accidents. Recent incidents in the Lake Zone regions have mostly involved them, and this campaign seeks to reduce and ultimately eliminate such dangers through education."
As part of the campaign, students were introduced to Proper Electricity Usage to help them save costs while staying safe.
They also learned about TANESCO’s new free customer service number, 180, which enables them to report electrical issues or seek assistance.
The interactive sessions allowed students to ask questions about electricity, the dangers of electrical accidents, and how to respond in emergencies.
Expressing their commitment to promoting safety, many pledged to share the knowledge they had gained.
"I will teach my family and friends what I have learned about electricity and safety," said one of the students. Others requested that similar programs be extended to students with special needs to ensure inclusivity in safety education.
