Tabora United out of CRDB Federation Cup after penalty defeat

Tabora United's journey in the 2025 CRDB Federation Cup came to an end after a dramatic penalty shootout loss to Kagera Sugar. 

The two teams drew 1-1 after 90 minutes of intense football in the round of 16, but Kagera Sugar triumphed 5-3 in the penalty shootout, securing a spot in the quarter-finals of the prestigious tournament.

The match, played at the Ali Hassan Mwinyi Stadium in Tabora, started off with Tabora United taking an early lead in the third minute. 

Andy, one of Tabora's standout players, found the back of the net, much to the delight of the home crowd. 

The early goal gave Tabora United a strong start, and the team looked confident in their quest to upset the higher-seeded Kagera Sugar.

However, Kagera Sugar responded in the 28th minute. Joseph Mahundi scored the equalizing goal for Kagera, bringing the score level at 1-1. 

Mahundi's well-taken goal shifted the momentum, and the match became an intense battle in the midfield, with both teams pushing for a decisive second goal before the final whistle. 

Despite several close chances from both sides, neither team could break the deadlock in regular time, sending the match to a penalty shootout.

The tension was palpable as the two teams lined up for the shootout. In front of a passionate home crowd, Tabora United initially looked to gain the upper hand, but Kagera Sugar’s composure under pressure proved to be the difference. 

The penalty shootout ended 5-3 in favor of Kagera Sugar, sending them into the quarter-finals and leaving Tabora United disappointed but proud of their fighting spirit throughout the game.

The elimination marked the end of Tabora United’s run in this year’s tournament, but the team can take pride in their performance, especially in a match where they held their own against a strong Kagera Sugar side. Despite the loss, Tabora United showed resilience and determination, fighting until the very end.

Kagera Sugar’s victory means they advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face some of the strongest teams in the tournament. 

Alongside Kagera Sugar, other teams that have progressed to the next round include Mbeya City, Singida Black Stars, Stand United, Yanga, and Simba.

 These teams will now battle it out for a coveted spot in the semi-finals, with hopes high for a thrilling conclusion to the competition.

Tabora United’s fans, though disappointed by the outcome, can look forward to their team's continued growth and improvement in future competitions. 

The match against Kagera Sugar demonstrated that Tabora United is a team with potential, and they will likely continue to be a force to be reckoned with in Tanzanian football.
