Tanzanians urged to maximize opportunities from CHAN tournament

Tanzanians have been encouraged to turn out in large numbers to support the national team during the African Nations Championship (CHAN), which will take place from February 1–28, 2025, in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Speaking at a press conference in Dar es Salaam on January 14, 2025, Leodegar Tenga, Chairperson of the CHAN and AFCON Organizing Committee, called on sports fans to seize this rare chance to showcase their patriotism and capitalize on the numerous opportunities the tournament presents.

“We urge all Tanzanians, particularly sports lovers, to show up in large numbers during the tournament to boost morale. This is a golden opportunity for the country,” Tenga emphasized.

He further appealed to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to ensure ticket prices remain affordable and to establish orderly entry protocols to encourage widespread attendance.

On infrastructure, Tenga highlighted the government’s significant preparations, which include both renovations and new construction to meet the tournament's requirements.

“Renovations at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium and New Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar have been completed. Additionally, training facilities at the School of Law Grounds, Gymkhana Grounds, and Major General Isamuhyo Grounds are nearing readiness. Overall, infrastructure preparations are 95% complete,” he noted.

To build enthusiasm, a sports stakeholders’ forum has been organized at the Rotana Hotel today. The forum aims to update participants on the progress made in preparing for the tournament and to discuss strategies for hosting the event successfully while boosting the performance of the national team.
