By Our ReporterThe Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, represented by Dr. Khatibu Kazungu, the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, participated in the 15th session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Council held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on January 11, 2025.
At the meeting, Dr. Kazungu provided a comprehensive overview of Tanzania's renewable energy projects, emphasizing their dual focus on environmental conservation and economic growth.
He underscored that Tanzania's renewable energy initiatives prioritize sustainable practices, ensuring minimal environmental impact while fostering significant economic and social benefits.
“Tanzania continues to prioritize renewable energy projects, which have proven to be crucial for both environmental preservation and economic development,” Dr. Kazungu stated during a discussion on the environmental implications and the importance of renewable energy in safeguarding the planet.
Dr. Kazungu highlighted the economic advantages of renewable energy projects, including job creation and increased income for communities living in areas surrounding these projects.
As an example, he referenced the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Power Project (JNHPP), which has provided employment for approximately 8,000 people.
On the environmental front, Dr. Kazungu noted that these projects are significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the ecological landscape, helping to mitigate the effects of climate change and combat drought.
He also mentioned other key projects, including the 150 MW Kishapu Shinyanga project and geothermal energy initiatives in Mbeya and Songwe, particularly at Kejo and Lake Ngozi.
These efforts not only contribute to Tanzania's energy security but also demonstrate the country’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions that benefit both the environment and the economy.
