The construction of Sumbawanga Airport is currently 40% complete, with the airport expected to be finished by March 2025.

The update was shared by Engineer Samweli Buha, the Airport Supervisor from TANROADS Rukwa Region, during a site inspection on January 8, 2025.

Deputy Minister for Works, Engineer Godfrey Kasekenya, visited the construction site and issued a strong directive to the contractor (company name) to expedite the work to ensure the project's timely completion.

"I am instructing those managing and implementing this project—including TANROADS, the consulting engineer, and the contractor—to ensure that all essential materials reach the site without delay. This will ensure that the construction proceeds as planned and meets the scheduled completion date," Kasekenya emphasized.

Sumbawanga Airport is part of a larger initiative to build four airports with the support of the European Investment Bank. The other airports include Kigoma, Shinyanga, and Tabora airports.

Kasekenya highlighted that once completed, the airport will significantly enhance investment opportunities in Rukwa Region by facilitating easier access for businesses and investors from neighboring regions and countries.

Engineer Buha also reported that the construction of the passenger terminal and access roads has already reached 90% completion. The remaining work includes the construction of the upper sub-base layer and the lower sub-base on the runway for aircraft takeoff and landing.
