The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has assured the people of Pemba that the government will construct numerous roads on the island to tarmac standards.

Dr. Mwinyi made this commitment during the inauguration of a 10-kilometer stretch of road connecting Micheweni to Kiuyu-Maziwa Ng'ombe and from Micheweni - Shumba Mjini to the port in Micheweni District, located in the North Pemba Region.

He further highlighted that the government has a special program to install streetlights on all newly constructed tarmacked roads across the country.

President Dr. Mwinyi called on citizens to refrain from building on road reserves, as these areas are designated specifically for infrastructure development.

He also addressed the issue of individuals constructing buildings along roadways in the hope of receiving compensation from the government, emphasizing that this practice is not acceptable.

Moreover, President Dr. Mwinyi urged local authorities to take stronger action in regulating construction permits and preventing unauthorized building along roadsides.

Presenting a technical report on the road construction, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transport, Dr. Habiba Hassan, stated that the 10-kilometer road projects align with the CCM Party’s 2020-2025 election manifesto, Zanzibar's Development Vision, the National Development Plan, and the National Transport Plan. As part of ongoing efforts, a total of 140.9 kilometers of roads have been built in Unguja, and 134.9 kilometers have been completed in Pemba.
