Head of the Medical Division at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), Dr. John Rwegasha, has been appointed as the Head of the Medical Services Unit at the African Union Commission, headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
He is expected to assume the role in February 2025.
During his farewell to the MNH management over the weekend, Dr. Rwegasha expressed gratitude to God for the opportunity.
He noted that the selection process was highly competitive, involving candidates from seven African countries, and he emerged successful.
MNH Executive Director, Prof. Mohamed Janabi, who also serves as the President’s Health and Medical Advisor, congratulated Dr. Rwegasha and wished him success in representing Tanzania effectively.
He emphasized the significance of Dr. Rwegasha's role in advancing healthcare across the continent through the AU.
Dr. Rwegasha is a distinguished gastroenterologist who played a key role in establishing MNH's training and treatment center for digestive and liver diseases in 2013.
He led the unit until 2018, when he was appointed Head of the Internal Medicine Department, overseeing 11 units.
In October 2022, he was promoted to Director of Medical Services, managing seven departments.
Regarding his academic qualifications, Dr. Rwegasha holds a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine from Makerere University, a Master’s in Medicine from Aga Khan University in Kenya, a Master of Science in Leadership from Mzumbe University, and a Health Management Diploma from the University of Washington in the United States.
He also has various professional certifications in medicine from universities in the UK and South Africa.
