Infrastructure achievements in Tanzania (2021–2024)

By John Godfrey

The Ministry of Works in Tanzania has achieved significant milestones between 2021 and 2024, focusing on enhancing the country’s infrastructure to support economic growth and improve the quality of life for its citizens.

One of the most notable achievements has been the construction and rehabilitation of roads. Paved roads have been extended across the country, including highways and regional routes, enhancing connectivity to key economic zones and social services.

These projects have reduced travel time, improved road safety, and facilitated the smooth movement of goods and services.

Among the major accomplishments is advancing the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Dar es Salaam. Additional phases of this system have been developed, providing a reliable and efficient public transport system for the city’s growing population.

The construction of the Busisi-Kigongo Bridge, the largest in East Africa, is another landmark project. Connecting Mwanza and Geita regions, the bridge has revolutionized transport and trade across Lake Victoria, eliminating dependence on ferries and significantly boosting economic activities in the region.

Another remarkable achievement is the development of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), a flagship project aimed at modernizing Tanzania’s rail transport.

The SGR, linking Dar es Salaam to Morogoro, Dodoma, and Mwanza, has seen substantial progress, with some sections already undergoing trial operations.

This railway is expected to transform the transport sector by providing a faster, safer, and more cost-effective means of moving goods and passengers.

It will also reduce wear and tear on roads, thereby lowering maintenance costs. The SGR project reflects Tanzania’s commitment to regional integration, as it connects the country to neighboring states, fostering trade and investment opportunities.

The aviation sector has also experienced notable advancements. The completion and operationalization of Terminal III at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) have significantly increased the airport’s capacity to handle international passengers and cargo.

This terminal positions Tanzania as a key regional hub for air travel and trade. Upgrades to regional airports such as Mwanza, Songwe, Mtwara, and Dodoma have further enhanced connectivity within the country and beyond.

These improvements support tourism, agriculture, and other sectors critical to the economy, ensuring that remote areas are accessible for business and leisure.

Bridges have been another focal point of the ministry’s efforts. The construction of the Tanzanite Bridge in Dar es Salaam has greatly eased traffic congestion, particularly between the city center and the Peninsula area.

This bridge is a modern architectural marvel and a vital piece of infrastructure that supports the city’s economic activities.

Similarly, the Kilombero II Bridge has improved connectivity between the Morogoro, Iringa, and Njombe regions, facilitating the transportation of goods and services in these agriculturally productive areas. Such infrastructure developments are key to unlocking economic potential and enhancing the livelihoods of communities.

Ports have also undergone significant improvements, with the Dar es Salaam Port leading the way. Berths have been deepened and modernized to accommodate larger vessels, increasing the port’s capacity and efficiency in handling cargo.

Upgrades to Tanga and Mtwara ports have further enhanced the country’s maritime infrastructure, supporting trade in the northern and southern regions.

These improvements have reduced congestion at ports, lowered shipping costs, and strengthened Tanzania’s position as a gateway for landlocked neighboring countries such as Rwanda, Burundi, and Uganda.

Incorporating modern technology has been a cornerstone of the ministry’s approach to infrastructure development.

Digital systems have been introduced to manage construction projects, enhancing transparency, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

Advanced technologies have also been employed in the design and execution of complex projects, ensuring that they meet international standards.

These innovations demonstrate the ministry’s commitment to leveraging technology to achieve sustainable development and deliver high-quality infrastructure.

The ministry’s achievements have not only improved physical infrastructure but also created significant social and economic benefits.

Thousands of jobs have been generated through these projects, providing employment opportunities for engineers, technicians, and other professionals. This has contributed to poverty reduction and skill development among Tanzanians.

Improved infrastructure has also facilitated trade, investment, and industrialization, aligning with the government’s broader economic goals.

For instance, better roads and bridges have enhanced access to markets for farmers, while upgraded ports and airports have attracted international investors.

These accomplishments are a testament to the government’s strategic planning, effective supervision by the Ministry of Works, and collaboration with development partners and the private sector.

The ministry’s efforts have been guided by a vision to create a robust infrastructure network that supports Tanzania’s aspiration to become a middle-income country.

By addressing critical infrastructure gaps and adopting innovative approaches, the ministry has laid a strong foundation for sustained economic growth and social development.

In summary, the period between 2021 and 2024 has been transformative for Tanzania’s infrastructure sector.

From roads and railways to bridges, ports, and airports, the Ministry of Works has delivered impactful projects that are reshaping the nation.

These achievements underscore the importance of investing in infrastructure as a driver of economic prosperity and improved living standards.

As the ministry continues its work, these developments are expected to unlock new opportunities and propel Tanzania toward a brighter future.
