Meeting of the workers' council at the attorney general's office

The Workers' Council of the Attorney General's Office held a meeting on January 24, 2025, at the Mwalimu Nyerere Leadership Institute in Kibaha, Pwani Region. 

The gathering brought together representatives from various Divisions, Sections, and TUGHE members of the Attorney General’s Office to discuss issues aimed at enhancing work performance and improving legal services for the public.

Speaking during the meeting, the Attorney General,Hamza S. Johari, emphasized that the purpose of the meeting was to assess the performance of the Attorney General’s Office and address challenges to improve the effectiveness of its operations. 

He specifically highlighted the importance of training lawyers to ensure they acquire the necessary skills and how the office can utilize technology, particularly the OAG-MIS system, to enhance service delivery.

Johari also noted the office's progress over the past year, particularly in providing legal advisory services. He shared that Legal Aid Clinics had been established to bring legal services closer to citizens in various regions. 

These clinics continue to offer free legal services, with the ongoing initiative currently serving residents of Kilimanjaro Region.

The guest of honor at the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Constitutional and Legal Affairs, Mr. Eliakim Maswi, commended the Attorney General’s Office for its efficient operations. 

He praised the decision to hold the meeting and stressed the importance of addressing issues within the office. 

In his remarks, Mr. Maswi urged the Attorney General's Office to continue providing contract review training for government lawyers. 

He emphasized that such training is crucial for managing government contracts effectively, ensuring that they serve the broader national interest.

Additionally, the Deputy Attorney General,Samwel Maneno, provided an update on the office’s achievements for the 2024/2025 period. 

He revealed that a total of 1,799 contracts had been reviewed, including 1,639 procurement contracts, 120 financial contracts, one related to natural resources, and 39 international cooperation contracts.

Lastly, Ms. Zella Rwemanyira, the Chairperson of TUGHE at the Attorney General's Office, encouraged staff to continue working diligently to uphold the principles of professionalism and excellence in their duties. 

She urged her colleagues to remain committed to high standards of performance to ensure the office's continued success.
