Deputy Permanent Secretary for Electricity and Renewable Energy in Tanzania’s Ministry of Energy, Dr. Khatibu Kazungu, has bolstered efforts to advance Tanzania’s renewable energy agenda during his recent visit to the Tanzanian Embassy in Abu Dhabi.
Accompanied by a delegation attending the 15th General Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Dr. Kazungu engaged in fruitful discussions with Tanzania’s Ambassador to the UAE, Retired Lieutenant General Yacoub Hassan Mohamed.
He highlighted the critical need for increased investment to support Tanzania’s renewable energy projects, emphasizing their role in mitigating climate change and fostering sustainable development.
Dr. Kazungu also lauded President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for prioritizing energy sector reforms, reaffirming the Ministry of Energy's commitment to delivering on these transformative initiatives.
Ambassador Yacoub underscored the vast opportunities available for Tanzanians in Abu Dhabi, urging citizens to follow the example of their counterparts from India, Kenya, and Uganda by tapping into the UAE’s job market.
He emphasized how these opportunities could significantly boost household incomes while contributing to Tanzania’s broader economic growth.
The ambassador also commended the Ministry of Energy and TANESCO for ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply, particularly for critical infrastructure projects like the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
He encouraged Tanzanians to serve as proud ambassadors of the SGR project and urged TRC and TANESCO teams to work collaboratively to ensure its smooth operation and lasting benefits.
As part of his visit, Dr. Kazungu participated in the opening of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, a key platform for global stakeholders to exchange ideas and explore investment opportunities.
The event also featured the prestigious Zayed Sustainability Prize, which recognizes exceptional contributions to sustainability.
A Tanzanian representative from Open Map Development won an award in the Climate Change category, a significant achievement highlighting Tanzania’s leadership and innovation in driving positive environmental impact.
This recognition is a testament to the country’s ongoing efforts to integrate sustainability into its national development agenda.
