A
devastating accident has claimed the lives of 11 people in Chang’ombe Village,
Segera Ward, Handeni District, Tanga Region. The victims were struck by a cement
truck that lost control while they were gathered on the roadside to assist at
the scene of an earlier accident involving a small Tata vehicle.
The
horrific incident unfolded in the early hours of January 14, 2025, when the
truck, bearing registration number T.680 BQW, suffered a brake failure while
traveling from Tanga. Careening off course, it plowed into the gathered crowd,
killing 11 individuals instantly and leaving 11 others injured.
Tanga
Regional Commissioner Ambassador Batilda Burian confirmed the tragic event and
extended her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. She also wished
the injured a swift and full recovery, emphasizing the profound grief shared
across the region.
The
bodies of the deceased have been transferred to Korogwe District Hospital,
Magunga, where the injured are also receiving medical care.
The
Regional Commissioner issued a stern reminder to drivers and vehicle owners
about the critical importance of maintaining vehicles in proper mechanical
condition. She stressed that regular checks and adherence to safety measures
are essential to prevent such devastating accidents.
This
tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the fragility of life and the
need for vigilance on our roads. Families and the community at large are left
mourning a heartbreaking loss, as they come together to support the injured and
remember those who have tragically passed.
