Tanzania to export 10 tons of honey to China in milestone deal

By Alfred Zacharia

Honey farmers have a reason to smile as the government is set to export 10 tons of honey to China on a trial basis, a consignment valued at over TZS 100 million.

The move highlights the growing international appeal of Tanzania’s high-quality honey products, giving honey producers a thrilling hope of extending their market and income earnings.

Announced during a ceremony held on December 25, 2024, in Dar es Salaam, this development is hailed as one of the key achievements of President Samia’s three-year tenure.

Officiating the event, Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office (Union and Environment), Dr. Selemani Jafo, described the initiative as a milestone in Tanzania’s journey to expand its presence in global markets.

“This shipment of Tanzanian honey to China signifies not just a trade opportunity but a gateway to greater international economic cooperation. It’s time for Tanzania to seize emerging markets like China and others around the world,” Dr. Jafo remarked.

The minister presided over the flagging-off ceremony for the inaugural consignment destined for China. He expressed optimism about the potential of this partnership to unlock more opportunities for Tanzanian honey producers and exporters.

“This initiative will inspire our beekeepers and businesses to increase production and enhance quality. It also reflects the government’s commitment to diversifying exports and creating a sustainable economic impact,” he added.

Dr. Jafo noted that the export aligns with Tanzania’s vision of economic transformation and international collaboration.

He applauded the Chinese market’s confidence in Tanzanian honey and pledged continued government support to strengthen the sector. The government is investing in infrastructure and creating a conducive environment to facilitate the production and export of honey in greater volumes.

Tanzania’s beekeeping sector is a vital component of the economy, generating income and employment for millions.

In 2022, the country produced approximately 31.35 million kilograms of honey, ranking as the 12th largest producer globally.

Beeswax production stood at 1.9 million kilograms in the same year. Exports of honey and beeswax have seen consistent growth, with Germany, the United States, and Japan among the key markets.

The export to China is expected to enhance Tanzania’s visibility in the global honey trade.

In 2023, honey exports totaled 337,269 kilograms, valued at $848,510, while beeswax exports reached 440,200 kilograms, worth $3.11 million.

The Chinese market’s inclusion signals a new chapter for Tanzania’s agricultural sector, offering immense potential for expansion.

This initiative underscores President Samia’s administration’s focus on innovation, international partnerships, and sustainable economic growth, paving the way for a brighter future for Tanzanian exports.
