Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Philip Mpango, has officially laid the foundation stone for the construction and expansion of Tabora Airport, applauding the Ministry of Works and the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) for their dedication to the project.
During the ceremony on October 9, 2024, Dr. Mpango urged the Ministry of Works and the Ministry of Transport to collaborate closely to ensure the timely completion of the project, stressing the importance of proper fund management to benefit the public.
"These funds come from the people, and it’s essential that they are used effectively to drive the intended development for the citizens," Dr. Mpango stated.
Addressing road safety, Dr. Mpango called on drivers and road users to strictly observe traffic signs to prevent accidents.
He also issued a stern warning to individuals tampering with road signs, reminding them that legal action would be taken against offenders.
Deputy Minister of Works, Engineer Godfrey Kasekenya, reported that the expansion project is 72% complete, and the new terminal will have the capacity to serve 120 passengers simultaneously upon completion.
"Honorable Vice President, the project also includes the construction of a runway, air traffic control tower, access roads, aircraft parking areas, vehicle parking lots, a security fence, and a weather monitoring station," Engineer Kasekenya detailed.
He further emphasized the government's commitment to extending paved road networks across the western regions to boost accessibility, support agricultural production, and drive economic growth.
Earlier, TANROADS CEO, Engineer Mohamed Besta, confirmed that the construction is being handled by Beijing Construction Engineering Group Co. from China at a cost of TZS 24.6 billion.
Established in 1940, Tabora Airport has undergone various upgrades over the years. Once completed, the airport will accommodate larger aircraft, fostering social and economic development in the Tabora region and beyond.
