By Our Correspondent, Ngorongoro.

A total of 58 households with 228 people and 350 livestock have moved out of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area today, September 7, 2024.

They relocated to Msomera village and other areas in Monduli, Meatu, and Simanjiro districts.

Flora Assey, the Chief Conservation Officer, said, “Today, 30 households with 151 people and 235 livestock moved to Msomera village. The other 28 households with 78 people and 115 livestock relocated to areas in Monduli, Meatu, and Simanjiro.”

Since the voluntary relocation began in June 2022, 1,627 households with 9,778 people and 40,051 livestock have moved out of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Hamza Hussen Hamza, speaking on behalf of the District Commissioner, said, “Your decision to relocate helps conservation efforts. It reduces human activities in the area and the challenges of living with dangerous wildlife.”

He added, “The government has already set up schools, health centers, water, electricity, and farmlands where you are moving. For those still undecided, we assure you that the government will continue to support and respect your rights.”

Senior Assistant Conservation Commissioner Gloria Bideberi stated, “The relocation process is quick. Once residents register and are compensated, they are moved within two weeks.”

She also noted, “Conservation and tourism activities are doing well. Vegetation is recovering, and more tourists are visiting.”

Elizabeth Saiboko, one of the relocating residents, said, “I decided to move for more freedom and a better future for my children. In Ngorongoro, conservation laws limit activities like farming and building permanent homes.”
