Hanang. Manyara—The Freedom Torch,
symbolizing unity and development, has arrived in Manyara Region from Singida,
poised to inspect and inaugurate a significant array of projects. The torch
will traverse seven local government authorities within Manyara, covering an
extensive 980.5 kilometers and evaluating 57 projects worth Sh 149.5 billion.
In a grand reception held at Gehandu
Village in Hanang District, Manyara Regional Commissioner Queen Cuthbert
Sendiga, in the presence of the National Coordinator of the Freedom Torch 2024,
Godfrey Eliakimu Mnzava, and Singida Regional Commissioner Halima Omary
Dendego, highlighted the significance of the torch's visit to the region.
"The Freedom Torch's journey
through Manyara will witness the launch, inspection, and inauguration of
various projects, underscoring our commitment to development," Sendiga
stated. During its stay, the torch will lay foundation stones for 17 projects
valued at Sh 134.1 billion, inaugurate 8 projects worth TZS 3.4 billion, open 4
projects worth TZS 1.3 billion, and inspect 28 projects worth Sh 10.7 billion.
The breakdown of funding for these
initiatives is diverse, encompassing contributions from citizens amounting to Sh
102.5 million, the central government providing Sh 72.8 billion, local councils
contributing Sh 169.7 million, and other stakeholders pitching in Sh 76.5
billion.
Commissioner Sendiga expressed
profound gratitude to the people of Manyara for their active involvement and
contributions towards these developmental projects. "I extend my heartfelt
thanks to the citizens of this region for their initiative, contribution, and
execution of these projects, as well as to the development partners who have
supported our region’s growth," she said.
Reflecting on the historical and
symbolic significance of the Freedom Torch, Sendiga remarked, "This year’s
Freedom Torch race is particularly special as it marks the 60th anniversary of
its inception, the 60th anniversary of the Zanzibar Revolution, and the 60th
anniversary of the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar, founded by our
esteemed leaders, the late Father of the Nation Mwalimu Julius Kambarage
Nyerere and the late Sheikh Abeid Karume. May their souls rest in eternal
peace."
In addition to its traditional messages, the Freedom Torch 2024 carries a specific theme for Manyara Region: "Protect the Environment and Participate in Local Government Elections for Sustainable Nation Building." This theme aligns with the broader national goals of fostering environmental conservation and encouraging civic engagement.
