The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) has called for faster implementation of power projects, urging its research and investment team to make greater use of technology and local expertise while ensuring projects are delivered within agreed timelines.
The directive targets the utility's Research, Planning and Investment (PRI) Department, which is responsible for planning and supporting major power generation, transmission and investment projects.
Speaking on September 17, 2026, at the closing of a four-day PRI Forum in Mwanza, Tanesco Geita Regional Manager Engineer Jahulula Jahulula, who represented the Lake Zone Director, said the department was central to the utility's expansion plans.
“Your department is the engine of Tanesco because planning for major power generation and transmission projects, research and investment begins with the work you do,” he said.
He urged staff to increase the pace of implementation, adopt appropriate technologies and make better use of Tanzanian professionals to improve efficiency in project delivery.
Engineer Jahulula also stressed the importance of meeting project timelines and contractual obligations, saying delays could undermine the effectiveness of major investments in the electricity sector.
He commended PRI staff for their contribution to several strategic projects, including the 2,115-megawatt Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP), the Kishapu solar power project and the Chalinze-Dodoma electricity transmission line.
He also cited the signing of a contract to build a 220-kilovolt transmission line from Mpomvu to the Geita Gold Mining (GGM) area as another milestone.
The department is also involved in regional power projects, including the Tanzania-Zambia Interconnector (TAZA), while preparations are underway to link Tanzania's electricity grid with those of Malawi, Mozambique, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Engineer Jahulula said the growing portfolio of projects required staff to remain focused on delivery, adding that Tanesco and the country depended on their performance.
“Each of us should understand that the Corporation depends on us, and the country depends on us. Continue working hard with patriotism and integrity,” he said.
