The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) has launched the Rhino Cup football tournament, bringing together teams from 11 wards in Ngorongoro Division as part of efforts to promote sports and conservation among local communities.
The tournament, which was officially opened on Tuesday at Makao Primary School grounds, will involve teams representing 11 wards across the division’s 25 villages.
Former Taifa Stars and Yanga coach Charles Boniface Mkwasa officiated at the opening ceremony, urging young people to view sport as a potential source of employment while using it to promote healthy lifestyles.
Mr Mkwasa also called on the youth to use football as a platform for strengthening community participation in conservation efforts, particularly the protection of wildlife and natural resources.
NCAA Deputy Conservation Commissioner Aidan Makalla said the authority had introduced the tournament as an annual event to encourage football development among communities living in the Ngorongoro area.
He said the competition would also provide an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of protecting rhinos and other natural resources found within the conservation area.
“This tournament will be held every year to promote football and, at the same time, create awareness among communities about the importance of protecting rhinos and other resources,” Mr Makalla said.
The competition will feature teams from all 11 wards in Ngorongoro Division, with the eventual champions set to receive a special opportunity to watch a Premier League match between Simba and Yanga during the current season.
The initiative is expected to combine sporting activities with conservation awareness, giving young people an avenue to develop their talents while strengthening their connection with efforts to protect the area’s wildlife and natural resources.
