A committee of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) has held talks with Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation to assess progress in involving citizens in the review of the draft constitution for the proposed East African Political Confederation.
The Committee on Regional Affairs and Conflict Resolution met ministry officials in Dodoma on September 22, 2026, as part of efforts to assess Tanzania’s progress in collecting public views on the draft constitution.
The meeting was chaired by the committee’s chairman, Mr Maina Karobia, while the ministry delegation was led by the Director of Political, Defence and Security Affairs, Ms Mwanamridu Amiry.
The committee received an update on the process and discussed how Tanzanians would be engaged in providing their views and perspectives on the draft constitution.
The engagement comes as East African Community (EAC) member states work towards a proposed political confederation, with public participation forming part of the broader process of developing the constitutional framework.
The committee also sought to identify progress made so far, challenges encountered and areas requiring improvement before the public consultation process gets under way.
The discussions were aimed at strengthening transparency and inclusiveness in the process and ensuring that views from citizens across EAC member states are considered as the region advances its political integration agenda.
The proposed political confederation is part of the EAC’s broader integration process, which has progressed from the Customs Union and Common Market to the Monetary Union, with political federation identified as the ultimate objective.
