The Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS) has been praised for upgrading a key road traversing the Pugu-Kazimzumbwi Nature Forest Reserve, with local authorities saying the improvement has enhanced safety, supported sporting activities and created fresh opportunities for tourism-led economic growth.

Kisarawe District Commissioner Petro Magoti said the improved road infrastructure had played a crucial role in facilitating a recent motor racing event, demonstrating the district’s potential to host major sporting competitions while maintaining environmental conservation objectives.

Speaking after the event, Mr Magoti said the success of the competition had strengthened plans to attract more sporting activities to the district, including national motorcycle racing championships that could draw visitors and generate income for local businesses.

“The experience shows that conservation and development can complement each other. Strategic investment in infrastructure within protected areas can create opportunities for tourism and economic activities that benefit surrounding communities,” he said.

The upgraded road, located within one of Tanzania’s important forest reserves, is expected to improve accessibility while supporting efforts to diversify tourism products beyond traditional wildlife attractions.

Acting Conservator of the Pugu-Kazimzumbwi Nature Forest Reserve, Mr Mbaruku Sinon, said the event had demonstrated the potential of TFS-managed areas to host sports and outdoor recreation activities.

He said the agency was keen to work with stakeholders to promote events such as marathons, cycling races and motorcycle competitions, which could help increase visitor numbers, raise awareness about conservation and create economic opportunities for nearby communities.

“Protected areas have value beyond biodiversity conservation. They can also serve as venues for responsible tourism and sporting activities that contribute to local development while promoting environmental stewardship,” he said.

Event Director Ifan Aladin said improvements to the road infrastructure had enhanced the quality of the competition and attracted participants from different regions of the country.

According to him, reliable infrastructure remains a key factor in attracting competitors, sponsors and spectators, adding that organisers were exploring opportunities to stage larger events in Kisarawe in partnership with TFS.

Participants also welcomed the road upgrade, noting that improved conditions had enhanced safety and boosted confidence among drivers competing in the event.

The initiative reflects growing efforts to integrate conservation, tourism and community development, with stakeholders viewing sports tourism as an emerging avenue for attracting visitors and unlocking new economic opportunities in areas surrounding protected forests.
