The government is stepping up efforts to improve reproductive, maternal and child health services as it moves to strengthen implementation of the African Union agenda championed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Eliud Eliakim on Monday, August 10, 2026, led a working session with officials from the Ministry of Health’s Reproductive, Maternal and Child Health Department to assess strategies for implementing the AU Champion initiative.
The meeting, held at the Ministry’s offices in Mtumba, Dodoma, focused on strengthening coordination, accountability and monitoring of interventions targeting women, mothers and children.
Dr Eliakim underscored the importance of closer collaboration among health officials and other stakeholders, saying effective implementation and accountability would be critical to translating government plans into better health services.
The officials also reviewed measures to strengthen the implementation and tracking of programmes aimed at improving reproductive, maternal and child health outcomes.
The discussions are part of Tanzania’s broader efforts to align national health interventions with African Union priorities while improving the quality and effectiveness of services delivered to women and children.
The initiative places emphasis on stronger planning, coordinated implementation and results-based monitoring to ensure that investments and interventions in reproductive, maternal and child health produce tangible benefits for communities.
The government has continued to prioritise maternal and child health as part of efforts to improve the wellbeing of Tanzanians and strengthen the country’s health system.
Monday’s meeting is expected to help sharpen implementation and monitoring mechanisms as Tanzania advances its commitments under the continental health agenda.
