Plans to establish a dry port in Tanga could help ease pressure on the Port of Tanga and improve the movement of cargo, following talks between Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) Director General Mohamed M. Salum and Tanga Regional Commissioner Ambassador Dr Batilda Burian.
The two officials met at the Regional Commissioner’s office on Monday to discuss the establishment, regulation and operation of a dry port, as the region seeks to strengthen its position as a trade and logistics centre.
The proposed facility is expected to provide additional space for handling and managing cargo away from the main port, helping to improve the flow of goods and reduce congestion at the seaport.
Mr Salum said TASAC would continue providing regulatory oversight and technical advice to investors and other stakeholders to ensure dry port operations meet legal requirements and deliver safe, efficient and competitive services.
He said effective coordination between TASAC, the regional government and other stakeholders would be critical to creating an investment environment capable of supporting the project.
For residents and businesses, the development could have wider economic implications if properly implemented, including more efficient cargo movement, reduced delays and improved access to trade and transport services.
Dr Burian said the Tanga Regional Government was ready to work with TASAC and other institutions to address challenges that could affect the implementation of dry port projects.
She said establishing a dry port would help streamline cargo movement, reduce congestion at the Port of Tanga and allow the port to concentrate more effectively on its core functions of loading and unloading cargo from ships.
The discussions come as Tanzania continues efforts to strengthen its transport and logistics infrastructure and improve the efficiency of trade corridors.
For Tanga, stakeholders will now be expected to translate the discussions into a clear implementation framework, including regulatory compliance, investment arrangements and operational plans.
If successfully implemented, the dry port could strengthen Tanga’s role as a logistics hub while creating opportunities for businesses involved in transport, storage, clearing and forwarding and other services linked to the movement of goods.
