NEMC, green summit organisers push climate action for jobs, investment

The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) has called for stronger collaboration with stakeholders to turn climate change responses into practical opportunities for Tanzanians, particularly in innovation, investment and employment.

The call was made during a meeting between NEMC and organisers of the Tanzania Green Summit (TGS) 2026, which is scheduled for September 15 and 16 at Mlimani City in Dar es Salaam.

The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation ahead of the summit and ensuring that discussions on environmental protection and climate change translate into solutions that can benefit communities and the wider economy.

NEMC Director General Dr Immaculate Sware Semesi said collaboration between the council and summit organisers was important in raising public awareness, encouraging innovation and increasing stakeholder participation in addressing environmental and climate-related challenges.

She placed particular emphasis on the role of young people, saying their involvement was critical in developing innovative responses to environmental challenges.

“NEMC, as the custodian of the Tanzania Green Summit, will continue supporting platforms that promote environmental sustainability, climate action and youth participation in the environmental and sustainable development agenda,” Dr Semesi said.

The partnership is also linked to NEMC’s strategic plan and Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050, which places emphasis on building a sustainable, resilient, innovative and inclusive economy.

For ordinary Tanzanians, climate action is increasingly connected to issues such as livelihoods, food security, access to clean energy, waste management and employment opportunities.

The summit is therefore expected to provide a platform for stakeholders to examine how environmental initiatives can deliver tangible economic and social benefits.

The 2026 Tanzania Green Summit will be held under the theme “Turning Climate Action into Opportunities” and is expected to bring together about 1,000 participants from different sectors.

Participants are expected to explore opportunities for innovation, investment, job creation, partnerships and sustainable development arising from efforts to tackle climate change.

The engagement between NEMC and the summit organisers signals an effort to ensure that climate discussions go beyond policy conversations and contribute to practical interventions capable of improving livelihoods while protecting Tanzania’s environment.
