African Development Bank (AfDB) President Dr Sidi Ould Tah has arrived in Tanzania ahead of the Africa50 General Shareholders’ Meeting and the Infra for Africa Forum, a high-level gathering expected to draw more than 1,200 investors, policymakers and business leaders to Dar es Salaam.
Dr Tah was received at Julius Nyerere International Airport by Finance Minister Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar before the two-day event, which will take place on August 5 and 6 at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC).
The meeting, held under the theme “A Decade of Economic Impact: From Ambition to Delivery,” comes at a time when African countries are seeking innovative financing solutions to close infrastructure gaps and accelerate economic transformation.
For Tanzania, hosting the forum presents an opportunity to market its strategic investment projects and position itself as a gateway for trade and investment in East and Southern Africa.
Government officials expect the event to strengthen engagement between the public and private sectors while attracting new investment into infrastructure projects that support the implementation of the Fourth Five-Year Development Plan (FYDP IV) and the National Development Vision 2050.
Among the projects expected to be highlighted are the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), the expansion and modernisation of the Dar es Salaam Port, power generation initiatives and digital infrastructure investments that have become central to the country’s industrialisation agenda.
The gathering is also expected to provide a platform for discussions on how African governments can mobilise private capital for infrastructure development amid growing demand for transport, energy, healthcare, education and telecommunications services.
Africa50, a pan-African infrastructure investment platform established by African governments and development finance institutions, works to prepare projects to investment-ready status and mobilise funding through equity investments and public-private partnerships.
Analysts view the forum as an important opportunity for Tanzania to deepen relationships with global investors and development partners while showcasing reforms and projects aimed at improving the business environment and supporting long-term economic growth.
The presence of the AfDB president underscores the significance of the meeting, which is expected to generate discussions on financing models that can help bridge Africa’s infrastructure financing gap and unlock greater private sector participation in development projects across the continent.
