A 19-year-old DJ has been sentenced to one year in prison after being convicted of publishing offensive content on TikTok targeting government leaders.

Ramadhan Rudabuka, a resident of Patamela in Chunya District, was convicted by the Mbeya Urban Primary Court after the prosecution presented evidence linking him to the publication of the content.

The sentence was delivered by Mbeya Urban Primary Court Magistrate Ayubu Shirima.

The court heard that Rudabuka recorded himself and shared videos on TikTok containing abusive language directed at government leaders.

The prosecution told the court that he published the content with the intention of attracting more followers to his account.

Rudabuka denied the allegations, but the court found that the evidence presented by the prosecution established his involvement in the offence.

In sentencing him to 12 months in prison, Magistrate Shirima said the punishment should serve as a lesson to the convict and others who engage in similar conduct, particularly through social media platforms.

The case comes amid growing scrutiny of content published on social media, with users facing legal consequences for material considered offensive or unlawful under Tanzania’s laws.

The court’s decision also underscores the need for social media users, particularly young people, to exercise caution when creating and sharing content online.
