More than 70 percent of business ideas submitted to the Vijana Uchumi Challenge are focused on agriculture and agricultural value addition, a trend that Youth Development Minister Joel Nanauka says has shattered the long-standing perception that young Tanzanians are not interested in farming.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam, Mr Nanauka said the competition attracted innovative proposals across the nine transformative economic sectors identified under Tanzania's National Development Vision 2050, with agriculture emerging as the clear frontrunner.
He said the majority of participants were not proposing conventional farming activities but innovative solutions aimed at increasing the value of agricultural products through processing, technology and stronger value chains.
"The submissions have disproved the belief that young people do not want to engage in agriculture. Instead, they have shown a strong interest in transforming the sector through innovation and value addition," he said.
The minister noted that the quality and diversity of the ideas reflected the growing entrepreneurial spirit among Tanzanian youth and their willingness to contribute to the country's economic transformation.
Apart from agriculture, contestants also presented proposals in manufacturing—particularly agro-processing—along with the creative industries, mining and tourism.
These sectors have been identified by the government as strategic drivers of sustainable economic growth and job creation.
According to Mr Nanauka, the innovations demonstrate that young people are increasingly positioning themselves as solution providers capable of addressing development challenges while creating businesses with long-term economic impact.
He said selected finalists will present their ideas to the public during the final stage of the competition, where winners will be announced.
The Vijana Uchumi Challenge is intended to nurture youth-led innovation and entrepreneurship while encouraging greater participation in sectors considered critical to achieving the goals of the National Development Vision 2050.
